Gareth is a cinematographer working internationally in films, TV, commercials, documentaries, music videos and everything in between. Coming up through lighting forged his love and fascination for the play of light and shadows. Before then he practiced photography while studying screenwriting and directing, which makes him an accomplished and well-rounded artist and collaborator.
In his own words:
“My love for cinematography stems from the power films had on me since a young age. As an adult it was the realization that without light there is no life. Cinematography is more than an art form – it is a way of observing the world, as well as a window into humanity and what makes us who we are.
My body of work encompasses films, documentaries, commercials and music videos. I’ve also shot branded and corporate content for Fortune 500 companies and startups alike.
I was fortunate to work on productions such as Stranger Things, South Park and the summer box office hit Sound Of Freedom. My work has won numerous awards and was mentioned in prestigious publications such as the British Cinematographer magazine.
Creating images and traveling are my biggest passions, while music gives rhythm to it all. Traveling is a phenomenal source of inspiration and a wonderful way to stay humble, open-minded and connected. I've visited 52 countries, worked on 5 continents and get around in 5 languages. Most importantly, I love what I do while craving inspiring, creative and emotionally impactful projects.
Born in Switzerland of a Swiss mother and British/American father, I grew up exposed to different cultures and fortunate to travel around Europe and Northern Africa at a young age - all of which had a strong impact on my growing consciousness. I would get lost in thought while observing the world around me.
Watching films felt magical, especially those of Chaplin and Hitchcock. Reading novels made me discover the power of storytelling. I was amazed to observe my imagination at work. It created images and feelings based on ideas and words, allowing me to drift into completely foreign worlds populated with fascinating characters.
After moving to California I studied screenwriting and directing, and picked up a 35mm still camera to play with on my free time. It wasn’t long before I merged these passions, and along with a fascination for lighting, I dove into cinematography.
20 years later I find myself with a vast body of work, considerable experience and even more passion for telling stories. I go where jobs need me while embracing opportunities to meet and connect with people all around the globe.”
